A gravel path and a wooden footbridge beside a rocky creek in the woods

On foot from the door

The Millrace Trail

A two-mile loop leaves from the back of the garden, follows the creek to the footbridge and comes back by the old mill road. It’s flat, mostly gravel and about 45 minutes at a stroll. The leaves turn in the first two weeks of October, and the creek is loudest in March.

A short drive

Tansy Falls and the covered bridge

The falls are a five-minute drive and a ten-minute walk from the parking lot. The village has a diner, a hardware store that sells good wool socks and a library with a Saturday book sale. The covered bridge, 3 miles up the road, is the place for a photograph in late October.

In fall color season, the lot at the falls fills by 10 am on weekends. Go early, or go at dusk.

Where to eat

Breakfast is with us. For dinner, the Tansy Falls Diner (open until 8, closed Tuesdays) is a ten-minute walk, and the Ferry Street Tavern in Hallam, 14 miles away, takes reservations. We keep a list of what’s open on holidays at the front desk.

Stay for the leaves, or the quiet

Fall color weekends need two nights. Winter is quieter and costs less.
